Newborn baby tied to mother's back die after police officers use tear gas to stop rally (photos)

- A baby died during the moment a Zambian opposition rally was being dispersed

- He was with his mother inside a house

- Police threw teargas, which entered the homes around the place were the concentration was planning to be held

A child died during an opposition UPND rally which was held in Kanyama township, on the Lusaka province of Zambia. The concentration was stopped by the Police with teargas, and in the middle of the hassle, a baby who was being carried by his mother in the back passed away from suffocation.

The baby on this woman's back is apparently the one that died.

The gases apparently reached people’s houses in the vicinity. The State Police who tore the rally apart was also heavily armed.

Another person, 20-year-old Stephen Kalipa, also died during the chaotic events. He was apparently stabbed with a knife by an unknown person.

Police Spokesperson Esther Mwaata Katongo confirmed the he passed away around noon, and announced that investigations regarding the murder were now underway.

There were several wounded people, and around 300 people arrested, although Katongo denies those claims, saying only two rally goers had been apprehended.
