Mrs Ginger Jones was touched by Mr Victor Hubbard's humbleness and intrigued by the fact that he was not begging or accepting any gifts from the people he greeted.
"I passed him every day on my way to work. He used to sit in a corner in Clear Lake City, near Houston. He greeted me every time I passed by and even wished me a safe day," Mrs Jones recalls.
Whenever she spoke to him, he asked how she was and told her to be safe. This was not making any sense for Mrs Jones because the man was not begging for anything as one would expect. He was simply sitting there and greeting people and smiling.
"I felt compelled to help Victor after I got to know him gradually. He never asks for any money, or anything for that matter. At times he refused money or food, only saying that he had already eaten," says Mrs Jones.
So she decided to find out more. She began by contacting the local authorities and others in the neighbourhood who knew about Mr Hubbard. In the process, she learned that he sat in the same corner every single day in the hope that his mother, who allegedly abandoned him some three years ago would come back.

The authorities also assured Mrs Jones that the man in question was not a danger to anyone, and that the reason why they were not looking into his case was because he had not broken any law or offended any member of the public.
Mrs Jones, who is married and has two children, then decided to take Mr Hubbard to her home to stay with her family. She also launched a crusade aimed at helping the homeless man.
To help him build his life, she gave him a job at her cookery school, and arranged for his healthcare, complete with prescriptions for mental illness and glasses.
Mrs Jones was able to raise some $25,000 (N8m) through her campaign dubbed, 'GoFundMe. The money, she says, was going to be used in taking care of Mr Hubbard's future accommodation.

She, however, did not disclose what kind of mental illness Mr Hubbard suffers from, though admitted she suspected, from the on-set, that he needed medical attention.
Mr Hubbard now lives with Mrs Jones' family. When the family is not at home, he stays in a hotel. He has since mastered his job at Mrs Jones' cookery and has gone ahead to get another job at a burger restaurant where he reportedly greets and smiles with guests while cleaning the dining room.
"He currently helps us clean and wipe tables and he talks to our guests. My goal for him is just to have a normal life and to be stable and happy," says Mrs Jones. " He is a family member and I treat him as of my son."
Not everyday do we come across people like Mrs Jones. Helping a homeless person, much less a man, regardless of their situation, takes courage and effort. Mr Hubbard will forever be grateful that he met Mrs Jones' family.
