A 31-year-old man whose head got separated from his spine following a horrific car accident in 2014 married his long-time girlfriend just four days before doctors switched off his ventilator, resulting in his passing.

After the accident, doctors said Tony Cowan's injury was so severe he was lucky to have survived. However, Tony had to depend on a ventilator to breathe.

Nevertheless, he showed a strong resolve to live as normally as he could with his girlfriend, with whom he had been together for 12 years.

Sadly, by December last year the pain had become too great for Tony. He decided that doctors should switch off his ventilator and allow him to pass away peacefully—but not before he married his long-time girlfriend, Karen Dawson.

They held a private ceremony at the hospital after which the doctors complied with his wishes four days later. Karen described the experience as bittersweet, as she had finally married the love of her life but was sad to have to let him go because of his pain.
