Police officers caught harassing Abuja commuters for bribe

Two police officers in Abuja have been caught harassing commuters under the guise of working at a check point to extort money from them.

According to the Premium Times reporter who witnessed the incident, on Thursday, December 29th, the officers stopped a vehicle carrying passengers in the area, popularly called Ali Brothers, close to the GSM village.

One of the officers was described to have been wearing a cardigan and the other was wearing a uniform bearing the name, Mohammed Azeh.

It was reported that the officers asked the driver to open the boot of the car and display the contents for them to see. The driver complied and brought out electrical wires, as well as a television set.

He was later asked to show a means of identification, which he also complied to.

Spokesman to the Federal Capital Territory police command, Manzah Anjuguri, who was contacted after the incident occurred, said the matter would be investigated.

He said: “Please provide us with the details of the location, the name of the officers, if you have them and we will investigate the matter.”

Premium Times reports that the officers involved are known to delay drivers, who refuse to part with money, for several hours.
