Julie Rankine has been freed from a jail term she was given for attacking her neighbour after suffering a stroke in prison.

The magistrate hearing her case was told that she had also assaulted her 56-year-old husband, identified as Mr Brendan, by hitting his face with spiked fence panel.

Additionally, the court heard that the troublesome lady held parties that ran up to late hours in the night, keeping the entire neighbourhood wide awake, not by choice but by force.

“There are numerous other complaints from her neighbours. These are not just assaults, but quite frankly they have to do with Rankine's behaviour as a neighbour going way back nine years,” Simon Cleary, the prosecuting attorney, told the magistrate.

The Birmingham Magistrates' Court has now decided to let Rankine free after 22 weeks in jail following a revelation that she is unwell.

Her lawyer, Lucinda Wilmott-Lascelles, seemingly put up a strong defense, arguing that her client’s health was deteriorating.

“She is in poor health following chemotherapy for cancer. She had also suffered a previous stroke, which meant she didn't have the use of her left hand,” Wilmott-Lascelles said.

However, Rankine’s release has come with preconditions that could see her go back to jail if she repeats fails to comply.

“I am putting my name to this order and it will come back to me personally if you breach it. If that happens, you can expect to be going back to cell, even if you are in your wheelchair,” said Judge Recorder Hegarty while delivering the ruling.

Though her release may not go down well with some of the neighbours that she had tormented, it is expected that Rankine will be in her best behaviours.
