A three-year-old girl who was born with three legs can now walk and even run after doctors successfully removed her third leg and extra organs.
Choity Khatun reportedly went through a complex and extremely rare surgery at Monash Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.
Prior to the surgery, a team of surgeons spent months planning how to get rid of the third leg and reconstruct Khatun’s anatomy.
“A twin had grown out of her pelvis but the twin was only part of a twin. The problem is there’s no rulebook for this because she’s a very unique individual. So you have to try and work out what was where,” says Chris Kimber, head of Monash Children’s Hospital.

According to Dr Kimber, Khatun was malnourished and couldn’t walk properly when she arrived in Australia. She was reportedly brought to the hospital by the Australian charity Children First Foundation.
The Australian surgeons, in collaboration with their colleagues in the United States and Europe, started by mapping out and studying Khatun’s anatomy before the operation could commence.
“Choity’s condition meant that body parts from a twin developed in her perineum — the area between the anus and the vulva. We also found that she had two rectums, anuses, vaginas and uteruses. In addition, she was incontinent” explains Dr Kimber.

Eight doctors specialised in genital and pelvic reconstructions were involved in the operation, which Dr Kimber describes as ‘extremely rare’ and extraordinary.
“We spent three or four months thinking about it, presenting it to other doctors, getting ideas from around the world, and then based on lots of world opinion, we were able to come up with something that clearly works,” he says.
The girl, it emerged, was also partially blind. This was revealed by an ophthalmologist, who also said her sight could not be improved.
The doctors, however, say Khatun has sufficient sight to see her path while walking.
