39-year-old Emmanuel Macron is the newly elected President of France.

However, a significant amount of attention has been directed at the country's next First Lady, his 64-year-old wife Brigitte Macron.

Brigitte, who is 24 years older than Macron, has been his guide and coach since he was 15 years old. Their relationship reportedly began when she was still his drama teacher.

When Macron was 17, he announced that he wanted to marry Brigitte, then aged 40. However, this came as a shock to his parents, according to Emmanuel Macron, A Perfect Young Man, a biography by Anne Fulda.

In an interview with Fulda, Macron's mother, Francoise Nogues-Macron, said: “We just couldn’t believe it. What is clear is that when Emmanuel met Brigitte, we couldn’t just say, ‘That’s great’.”

Nevertheless, she said they soon accepted the relationship: “What mattered to me was not the fact he was having a relationship with Brigitte but that he was alive and there weren’t any problems.”

Their relationship at first shocked Macron's parents, but they soon accepted it

Brigitte, who already had three children, divorced her husband and eventually married Macron in 2007.

Since then, Brigitte has reportedly been Macron's biggest influence and advisor. Marc Ferracci, Macron's friend, said: “Emmanuel Macron wouldn’t have been able to embark on this adventure without her. Her presence is essential for him.”

During a campaign speech recently, Macron acknowledged the role Brigitte has played in his life: "I owe her an enormous amount because she has contributed to make me the person I am."

Brigitte also confirmed the central role she plays in his life during an interview: “I’ve been involved in everything at his side for 20 years. You always seem surprised that spouses are beside their husbands. It’s time for things to evolve. That’s where we belong.”
