SO SAD! A baby with no arms or legs was born in Tanzania
- A girl in Tanzania was born with Tetra-amelia
- This rare condition renders babies limbless
- They are born with no arms or legs, but can otherwise lead healthy lives
A very rare case of Tetra-amelia syndrome recently occurred in Singida, Tanzania. Two months ago, a baby girl was born without limbs, which is a terrible consequence of this rare genetic disorder, which only happens with one in 71,000 pregnancies worldwide.
The girl with this congenital disease does not arms or legs, but is otherwise in good health. “In Tanzania we have a problem with keeping records… as far as I know, this case is the first in Singida,” said Dr Ramadhani Kabala, who is the Medical Officer at Singida Regional Hospital.

The baby’s mother, Zaharia Hamza, comments that “at the hospital where I gave birth in February this year, doctors advised me to nurture my baby like any other child,” adding that “there are people who think I consumed some harmful medicine during pregnancy [yet] I believe it’s God’s will.” She says she will take care of her child until she becomes an adult.

Hamza had a rutinary pregnancy, took her folic and iron supplements, but doctors already detected something was wrong during the ultrasound checkups.
A world renowned motivational speaker, Nick Vujicic, who was also born with Tetra-amelia, warns many children born with the condition “may not receive the care they deserve [and this] may be attributed to the poverty situation and cultural beliefs.” Well, thank God that will not be the case with Hamza and her baby.
