A teenage student in South Africa had to undergo surgery in order to correct the damage a teacher inflicted upon his hand, after a beating.

Xolo Khuboni, who studies at KwaMncane High School in Elandskop‚ Pietermaritzburg in South Africa‚ received three strokes with a plastic pipe on his hand, along with three other classmates. They were being punished for not finishing their English homework.

One day later, Khuboni’s right hand started to swell, and then developed pus inside. He could not even move his fingers. It was then that his family decided to take him to the doctor, who concluded he needed an operation.

“When he told me his teacher had beaten him‚ I just ignored it‚ because teachers do punish children at school,” his mother Lindi Khuboni said‚ but now she is angry at the incident and reported it with the school principal, who denied the school allowed corporal punishments, and was not aware of the the one that was given to Khuboni.

Because of the surgery, Khuboni missed his term exams. He confronted the teacher‚ but she told she had no regrets about what she had done, later accusing him of lying. Corporal punishment is illegal in South Africa, so the teacher could get into trouble if the beating is proved. “Not only I have missed my exams‚ but I can’t use my hand‚” Khuboni lamented.

The Department of Education is promising to look up into the allegations. “We have been clear to the teachers about corporal punishment. We are appealing to the teachers to conduct themselves in a manner that will not jeorpadise their jobs‚” a Department spokesperson, Muzi Mahlambi, argued.
