PDP crisis: It’s not true, Makarfi not registering new political party
- The Ahmed Makarfi faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has denied attempting to register new political party
- The group said it has no plan to drop the PDP for Ali Modu Sheriff
In a seeming twist of events, the Ahmed Makarfi group of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) that was alleged to have approached the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to seek registration for a new party, has made a U-turn.
Last week, reports claimed that Makarfi had approached the INEC to register Advanced People’s Democratic Party (APDP) following the over the one year crisis that has bedeviled the party where his group is locked in a battle of wits with Ali Modu Sheriff.
But in a statement obtained by Daily Trust, the Senator Ahmed Makarfi led National Caretaker committee has denied involvement in the planned registration of the APDP.

Spokesman of the committee, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, said in a statement on Sunday that the faction has no plan to drop the PDP for Senator Ali Modu Sheriff.
The statement read in part: "We state clearly and without ambiguity that the National Caretaker Committee of the PDP is not in any way involved in the plans to register any party by the name APDP or any other party for that matter.
"We however, acknowledge and recognize the rights of party members to seek alternative platform to actualize their political dreams which is an inalienable right guaranteed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
