PDP crisis deepens as workers shun Sheriff, give condition to work with him

- PDP workers shunned calls by the party national chairman, Ali Modu Sheriff, to resume duties at the party's secretariat

- The secretariat, which had been locked since May last year, was forced open by Sheriff a few days ago

- The workers numbering 127 lamented the atmosphere of insecurity and instability at the secretariat

- The workers vowed not to resumed work until certain conditions are met

Workers of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday, March 6, 2017, have vowed not to work with the national chairman of the party, Ali Modu Sheriff.

The workers numbering 127, who met in Abuja said they would not resume until the Supreme Court rules on the crisis, The Punch reports.

This was contained in a statement read by the national director of administration of the party, Gurama Bawa, the workers.

Last week, Sheriff had appealed to the workers to resume their duties at the party’s national secretariat which has been locked since May last year and was forced open by Sheriff a few days ago.

At the meeting, which was held at the temporary office of the party opened by the sacked National Caretaker Committee of the party led by Senator Ahmed Makarfi, the workers raised concerns about their safety at the party secretariat.

According to Bawa, the workers were being affected by the crisis rocking the party as they were not being paid as at when due.

He said: “To put it mildly, one of the major casualties of this power struggle has been the staff of the PDP national secretariat, many of whom have spent 17 years of their working life striving to establish and grow the bureaucracy of the party.

“They have witnessed their salaries wither away, receiving just about 32.50 per cent of their 2015 salaries. Their housing, transport, and other allowances have all fallen into arrears with many members of staff thrown out of their accommodations by landlords.

“Members of staff are desirous of resuming work after having been made victim of problems they never caused but are concerned about their safety.”

There seems to be no end to the crisis rocking the PDP. Last week, reports surfaced that Makarfi had approached the Independent National Electoral Commission to register a new party called the Advanced People’s Democratic Party (APDP).

However, the Makarfi-led National Caretaker committee has denied involvement in the planned registration of the APDP.

Just as the PD is upside down, Nigerians are also lamenting that the country is upside down.
