Meet first black woman who becomes commander of massive military cargo plane (photo)

- For the first time ever a black woman has become the commander of a C-130 military cargo plane in the South African Air Force

- Commander Nandi Zama was promoted to commander after piloting the massive aircraft for four years

- Recently she successfully completed her first mission as commander of the aircraft

31-year-old Nandi Zama never expected to become the first female commander of a flying fortress for the South African Air Force.

First black woman to become COMMANDER of massive military cargo plane

Major Nandi Zama became the first black female C-130 commander

Nandi recently made her first flight of the massive C-130 cargo plane and successfully completed her mission by landing the aircraft safely in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Lieutenant Colonel Ntsikelelo Mantshongo, a spokesperson for the South African Air Force, stated: “If there’s a mission and she needs to take the aircraft‚ she needs to assemble a team that includes specialists on board. The plane can take up to 160 people.”

Zama had been piloting the gargantuan four-engine C-130 for four years before she was promoted to commander.

Before she got into the cockpit of the bulky military cargo plane she piloted a Cessna Caravan and a CASA C-212 Aviocar.

“Flying the plane is not something you can explain in words. You just have to be there to experience it‚” she stated.
