31-year-old Nandi Zama never expected to become the first female commander of a flying fortress for the South African Air Force.
Nandi recently made her first flight of the massive C-130 cargo plane and successfully completed her mission by landing the aircraft safely in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Lieutenant Colonel Ntsikelelo Mantshongo, a spokesperson for the South African Air Force, stated: “If there’s a mission and she needs to take the aircraft‚ she needs to assemble a team that includes specialists on board. The plane can take up to 160 people.”

Zama had been piloting the gargantuan four-engine C-130 for four years before she was promoted to commander.
Before she got into the cockpit of the bulky military cargo plane she piloted a Cessna Caravan and a CASA C-212 Aviocar.
“Flying the plane is not something you can explain in words. You just have to be there to experience it‚” she stated.
