INEC sends all directing staff away from Rivers over messy outing, indicts 202 others

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has sent all its directing staff, administrative secretary and heads of departments away from Rivers state following a messy outing at the recently held local government election in the state.

Also affected by the massive shake-up were all the electoral officers heading the 23 local government areas in the state.

“By March 4, five more RECs will complete their tenure. This is in addition to the 28 RECs who had earlier completed their tenure.

“Those leaving are: Prof. Jacob Jatau (FCT), Mr Segun Agbaje (Ondo), Barr Austin Okojie (Bayelsa), and Mr Nasir Ayilara (Niger),” the commission said.

This means that the country now has a deficit of 33 electoral commissioners about two years to the 2019 general election.

INEC also confirmed the indictment of 202 of its staff who allegedly benefitted from N23 billion bribery allegedly reportedly facilitated by former minister for Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Maduekwe, ahead of the 2015 2015 elections.

Premium Times reports that INEC said in a statement that the affected staff in 14 states “were accused of certain infractions.
