A lawyer in the ongoing trial of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra Nnamdi Kanu has said that granting him and three other accused persons bail will bring relative peace to Nigeria.

A lawyer representing the Indigenous People of Biafra has said that admitting Nnamdi kanu and his co-accused to bail will bring peace to Nigeria

Maxwell Opara counsel to the fourth defendant in the matter said the continuous detention of Kanu and three others - David Nwawuisi, Benjamin Nwabugwu and Chidiebere Onwudiwe - has led to the tension in Nigeria's polity.

He said: "My lord, granting the defendants bails will bring peace to the country."

Opara while make his submission on the bail applications made by Kanu and three other defendants said the defendants have not committed any capital offence but have become political prisoners for the Nigerian government.

The lawyer made the submission after the court was informed about a fresh application for bail made by the defendants

At the resumed hearing at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday, March 20, the counsel to the IPOB leader Ifeanyi Ejiofor informed the court that a fresh application has been filed by his team for his client's bail.

Ejiofor prayed the court to admit his client to bail on very favourable conditions.

He also said that Kanu is a titled chief who have been very popular since his trial which Ejiofor noted has gained international attention.

He said his client was ready to face trial in other to, "clear his name from the bogus allegations that has been leveled against him by the federal government."

The court has further said it will rule on the fresh bail application on March 25

Nyako also said that the court will rule on an application filed by the defendants urging the court to vary its ruling on protecting witness that will testify in the trial on Thursday, April 6.

She had ruled the security operatives that will be testifying against Nnamdi Kanu and three other accused person - David Nwawuisi, Benjamin Nwabugwu and Chidiebere Onwudiwe - will be protected behind a screen.

They are facing charges bordering on treasonable felony, concealing of goods in a container among others.

She also noted that the names of the operative will be protected while alphabets will be used to identify them.

However, the judge also said that all other witnesses except those from the State Security Services (SSS) will testify in public.
