I did not remove Ali Ndume as Senate leader - Saraki

Nigeria's Senate president, Bukola Saraki, has said there was no truth in insinuations that he sacrificed Senator Ali Ndume who was recently sacked as the Senate majority leader.

Saraki stated this while speaking with State House correspondents shortly after meeting behind closed doors with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, in Abuja, on Wednesday, January 11.

The Senate president on Tuesday, January 10, announced Ndume’s removal shortly before the upper chamber adjourned, replacing him with Senator Ahmed Lawan.

Ndume protested his removal by the APC caucus in the upper house of legislature warning the Senate that such actions should not be allowed in future because it casts doubts on the integrity of the Senate.

He said: "If this happened to me today, it could be Ekweremadu tomorrow, we must protect the integrity of the Senate."

Meanwhile, Senator Shehu Sani, representing Kaduna central, has reacted to the emergence of Ahmed Lawan (Yobe North) as the new Senate majority leader.

He said: “It's hoped that the new change in the senate APC leadership, as announced by the Senate President Dr Bukola Saraki, will finally heal the wounds of acrimony and division within the Senate APC caucus and usher in a new phase and chapter among members of the Party in the Upper House”.
