Rivers rerun: President Buhari issues STERN warning
- President Muhammadu Buhari has issued a stern warning to all stakeholders in Rivers state on the forth coming rerun election
- The president made it clear that the Saturday, December 10, Rivers state rerun election is not a do or die affair
- He also cautioned all law enforcement agents to carry out their duties professionally and deal with trouble-makers decisively
President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday, December 9, said the River state rerun election should not be seen as a do or die affair.
In a statement released by the special adviser to the president on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, the conduct of Saturday’s election must be peaceful and orderly.
The president also called on all political parties, candidates and stakeholders in the state to ensure that rigging, violence and intimidation are avoided at the polls.
Buhari urged all politicians and their supporters in the state to put the interest of Rivers state people in mind while going to the poll on Saturday.

He said: "The rerun elections should not be seen as a do-or-die affair to the extent that people will be killed, maimed and property destroyed in a mindless display of crude primitive instincts. Innocent blood should never be sacrificed on the altar of political contest for temporary power.”
To the security operatives and law enforcement agencies, President Buhari said all duties must be carried out in the most professional manner.
He also called for non-partisan participation by law enforcement officials during the rerun election.
However, the president directed that all trouble makers and those violating the sanctity of the electoral process be decisively dealt with.

“He also enjoins the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to do all within its powers to give transparency and fairness to the electoral exercise in Rivers state,” Adesina said.
“The president restates the commitment of his administration to deepening democracy in the country by enthroning a legacy of respect for the wishes of the people through free, fair and credible elections devoid of intimidation and violence throughout the federation,” he added.
Meanwhile, the inspector general of police Ibrahim Idris had recently withdrawn the chief security officer to the Rivers state governor Nyesom Wike.
Idris in a statement said Wike's chief of staff was withdrawn over professional misconduct exhibited in carrying out his duties in the state.
