ECOWAS appoints President Buhari appointed as Chief Mediator
Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari has been unanimously appointed as the 'Chief Mediator' of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
President Buhari, alongside other African leaders played vital roles in ensuring that the ousted Gambian president concedes to his successor, Adama Barrow.
Consequent upon this, all Heads of State of ECOWAS member countries have agreed be present at the inauguration of the latest addition to the African leaders which will take place in Gambia on January 18, 2017.
A communiqué issued as resolve of their 50th Ordinary Session held in Abuja, Nigeria's federal capital, same day the president clocked 74, ECOWAS member countries noted that incumbent Yahya Jammeh is mandated to guarantee a smooth transition for the incoming president, as well as his safety.
The statement obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reads: “The Authority calls on President Yahya Jammeh to accept the result of the polls and refrain from any action likely to compromise the transition and peaceful transfer of power to the President-Elect."
The Ghanaian president was also appointed as the Co-Mediator for his role in the Gambian political unrest.
